Take that First Step.

It is said that the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. The same can be said about Life. Everyone has goals they would like to achieve, however if no step is made to reach your goal, nothing will ever be achieved. I believe that me literally taking that single step, and the ones that followed, changed my life, and possibly saved it.


Three years ago, I lost my job, my parents died within a year of each other, and I was in constant pain from Rheumatoid Arthritis. I gained a lot of weight and was on medication for high blood pressure. I decided to change my life, so I made a step by step plan.

Step One was just that…taking a step. I started walking, then running, and made a commitment to enter at least one 5K per month to keep me on track. By the end of the first year, I had completed thirteen 5Ks, one 6K, one 6 mile walkathon, one 12K hike, culminating with the Reggae Marathon 10K in December 2014.



Step Two: I hired a Personal Trainer to hold me accountable since it is more difficult to quit if there is someone there to encourage and keep you on the path.


Step Three: Change of diet. A friend told me about a diet programme which I pursued with diligence for six weeks, with excellent results.


Step Four: Joining a Gym. I discovered that while I was losing weight, I needed to be toned so I joined a gym, and going became a habit. It was always a struggle to get up and leave home at 5am, but I realized that once I got to the gym, I never regretted going.


Step Five: Not to allow setbacks to set me back. Each obstacle once overcome, strengthened me mentally. I constantly set new milestones to achieve, and with each success, I became mentally and physically stronger.


Today I am 60 pounds lighter, and the journey continues.

My advice to anyone who wants to make a change is:

You don’t have to do it alone. I had a lot of friends who supported and encouraged me along the way.


Success will not be instant. Don’t get discouraged if things do not change as quickly as you would like. Stay positive even throughout setbacks, and you will reach your destination.

    And the journey can be applied to other areas of life.

  2. Congratulations on bothy our achievement and for the launch of this blog , Carla! as I’ve already said elsewhere you have inspired me on my daily five mile walk (and now gym classes) so I’m au fait with the effectiveness of inspiring others through personal progress. Keep it up!

  4. Carla I lift my hat to you girl. Congratulations on your successes and your tenacity. That 1st step is a whopper and I have to find that strength. Your story and photos are an inspiration and I pray I have even a fraction of your will to begin. Can you share that diet that you mentioned? Thanks.

  5. EXCELLENT CARLA on the success of your “journey” thus far and the launch of this blog.

    Permit me to add that every step begins with the decision and/or conviction to make that step. When we connect with “that thing” that says ” it’s time…let’s do this!” there is no stopping us. Then suddenly things matter; what, when and how much we eat. It’s a blessing to know a real testament to weight loss. Knowing your story and seeing you, are reminders of what’s possible when we make the first step. Thanks for being an inspiration Carla.
